Winter sat at her desk in the Richmond BAU and stared at her phone screen. She had long ago accepted the drudgery of paperwork as a necessary part of her job but knowing there was a case developing while being frozen on standby was driving her insane.

She wanted to be out there. In the field. Chasing, hunting, solving, and one-hundred-percent focused on stopping another psychopath from wreaking havoc on the innocent.

With every passing hour, Winter found it harder to wait for a summons to jump in her car and drive to Dearborn. She wanted to leave now but was aware that any erratic behavior would not be helpful in proving her full recovery to her superiors.

Justin’s voice in her head was silent, and she’d tossed away the pain pills and suffered through the agony of withdrawal. Every morning she woke with the sensation of having regained her power, energy, and sanity.

All Winter required now was an outlet for her restored energy. A distraction to help her avoid obsessing over her brother’s whereabouts. When Justin would be found. How many people had he murdered before being caught, assuming he ever was apprehended at all?

“Where are you, little brother?” Muttering to herself as she clicked open a file pertaining to the previous case in Washington, D.C., Winter tried to focus on the task of documentation before her.

She couldn’t, though. Intuition chimed an incessant warning, insisting that Justin was making a show of the European murders just to prove he could. To remind her that he was still in charge.

Her bones ached with icy certainty. Justin was coming her way. Sooner versus later.

After her three-day experience as Justin’s captive, Winter understood her baby brother was dominated by a desire to possess and kill her. The flip side to that coin was that she’d become fixated on ending him as well.

“Dammit. This isn’t focusing, Agent Black.” She cast a glance at her phone screen. Nothing from Aiden.

Just let me go to Dearborn. Let me do something.

Restless, Winter leapt from her chair to head to the breakroom for coffee. On the way, she paused to give Noah’s shoulder a pat. “Gonna go grab some caffeine. Want anything?”

Noah turned to scan her face with his dark green stare. “I’m good, but thanks.”

She wondered if he’d ever stop being so overly anxious about her state of mind. Considering the plethora of reasons she’d given him to worry, it was doubtful. In an unexpected turn of events, she’d even come to appreciate the protectiveness.

Her love for Noah compounded with every passing day. He’d been her rock throughout the last six months of hell, and she never wanted that bond to waiver.

A short walk down the hall from the BAU office led her to the deserted break room. Winter poured a mug, relieved to no longer be at the mercy of Special Agent Denae Monroe’s coffee brewing insanity in Washington, D.C., and took a seat at one of many round tables.

She gulped the much-needed brew as Miguel entered the room.
